Competency and Authentic Assessment
The challenge of finding the right person to bring the skills you need to your workplace seems to be growing. The cost of recruiting is high and needs to be managed. The specification and assessment of required skills is not as easy as ABC. However, CA may be part of the solution. The Competencies and Assessment processes have been given attention recently by ACE(American Council on Education) in the white paper "Communicating the Value of Competencies"
The competencies learned in a School of Trade and Technology, for the "core" subjects, have traditionally followed a Lab/Lecture or perhaps a Shop/Classroom model. A course course final grade may have been calculated from a combination of Labs, Assignments and Tests.
As authentic assessment is developed, Lab or Shop Tests are an opportunity to approach assessment of many of the competencies which employers will specify in Job descriptions. The "soft technology" essential skills of critical thinking, collaboration, verbal and written communication, research, document use, computer literacy and customer service skills are also prominent in the job descriptions for positions in trades and technology.
The Lab/Lecture or Shop/Classroom model for "soft technology" courses may also be an opportunity to develop authentic assessment of competency in these skills as specified in job descriptions.
