A Guide to using the 5W's and the two ABC's in proposal writing

15 comments:

  1. The ABC's will help you write your first business proposal by providing a basic guideline of organization (abstract, body, conclusion). The other ABC's (audience, business-like, concise) help you determine how the proposal is written. For example, you want to have just the right amount of information (concise), and make sure there are no spelling errors, etc. (business-like).

The audience part of this method kind of answers question two. Knowing who your audience is (Who?) will determine how the proposal is written (for example, are you writing for an engineer or someone that works at Tim Hortons?) Using trade lingo may not be wise when writing for an average person who may not be aware of these terms.

  3. The ABC's will help to write a proposal because it gives you a format for you to work with to help you get the proper information across in a appropriate amount of words with all the information needed. Also the other set of ABC's will help you edit it to make sure you sound professional , so the client doesn't take you as a joke . The who question will help with the material list, because depending on who the client is the materials might have to be different . For example if you have to build a set of steps am older person might need steps with a smaller rise, therefore materials will be different.

  13. The ABCs(Audience, Business Like, Concise) help use focus on topics to either elaborate on or keep brief.

The "Who?" question, of the 5Ws(Who, What, When, Where and Why), helps us write a materials list by allowing us to decide what type of language to use and how detailed the list should be. For example: If you are writing the list for a carpenter trade lingo would be acceptable. If the list is for a home-owner you should avoid trade lingo.

The second ABC's (Audience, Businesslike, Concise) are helpful because any form of technical writing is for someone Keeping the right amount of information in your proposal is key as the audience can follow short writing better. By keeping the proposal businesslike and free of grammatical and spelling errors, you are showing that you are the right person for the job.

Q2. How does the “WHO?” question help you write the materials list?

A2: The audience you are writing for is very important because if you are using trade specific terms some people may not be aware of what they are. A material list in particular has a large variety of trade jargon, by itemizing and simplifying this list the client has a better understanding of where their money is going to be allocated.
