Understanding Nonverbal Language

Besides words and tone, nonverbal cues contribute to spoken communication. Body language and gestures add meaning to your message. Nonverbal language includes hand and arm motions, eye contact and movement, facial expressions, the position of your body, and your overall appearance. (Butterfield, 2013)

Some tips from the Butterfield Text will help you make your nonverbal language effective.

  1. Very informative video. I'd say the best way to put a positive vibe on nonverbal communication is with eye contact. Establish a solid eye-to-eye connection with the speaker to let them know you're interested. Also, face the person you're communicating with. Sit or stand up straight so you don't give off a look of boredom or disinterest. You want to ensure the speaker knows that you're listening and a lasting impression is being made.

  2. To send good non verbal clues at college and the work place. If another co worker or student was speaking to you , maintain good posture and eye contact with the speaker to let them know your interested and listening. Don't be within the speakers personal space but be close enough so the speaker doesn't have to raise there voice. Maintain good facial expression to be polite and good to talk to. Be appropriate with gestures. Good video for making yourself better non verbal language communication.

  3. Effective communication helps us better understand a person or situation and enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish. As simple as communication seems, much of what we try to communicate to others—and what others try to communicate to us—gets misunderstood, which can cause conflict and frustration in personal and professional relationships. By learning these effective communication skills, you can better connect with your spouse, kids, friends, and coworkers.

  7. Very good video, I think the best way to send nonverbal communication is with gestures like eye contact and hand motions to let them know your interested in what they have to say. Be appropriate with your gestures and be content. Make sure you make a lasting impression with your eye contact so what you say sticks. Make sure your facial expressions match what they have to say so it shows your are listening or match your facial expressions with what you are saying so they connect with your moods. By doing this you can make a lasting impression with your co-workers, bosses and clients.

  38. From my experiences, non verbal communication such as eye contact, body language and hand gestures can be useful communication tools. However, discretion should be used as other cultures do not share the same gestures we may be used to, ie. waving is considered offensive to some. So I believe to practice proper non verbal communication in college and the workplace you should first educate yourself on what gestures could be offensive to others.
